We all know you can borrow CDs, DVDs and magazines from libraries as well as books, but now there is The Living Library which twists the concept of a traditional library: you don't borrow a book, you borrow a person!!
Libraries arrange for members of the community to act as 'books' that can be borrowed for a short time to talk about their life. Books may be members of minority groups or people who have experienced prejudices and have a story to share. The Living Library gives people the opportunity to talk to someone they may not normally meet in the course of their everyday life. Readers are able to issue a book for a short time and are given the chance to discuss any assumptions and preconceived notions they may have.
Participating Books and Readers alike have reported that The Living Library has given them a new perspective on life.
Contact your library to find out if they are running The Living Library and sign up as a Book or become a Reader during Library Week.
